How To Deal With “The Comments”

Whether you are a virtual assistant, a writer or any other type of wahm (or wah dad), you have heard the occasional “comment”. You know the ones. We’ve all heard them. “Can you do fill-in-the-blank for me because you’re at home and I have to work?” “It must be nice to be home all day with your kids.” “How is that little internet thing going.” “You just play around online all day.” Sometimes, it goes in one ear and out the other. Sometimes, it gets under our skin. The problem is that people like that are just never going to get it. With friends and family, you can just politely change the subject instead of trying to explain what it is that you do all day for the millionth time. With strangers, you can think up some witty reply. Maybe “I can’t do fill-in-the-blank because it will interfere with my nap” or, how about the popular, “I invented the internet. It’s going pretty good.” Sarcasm aside. The problem can be either avoided completely or nipped in the bud before you go postal in your own living room. But, what do you do if a client has that perspective? Unfortunately, I

I’m so lucky to be a WAHM

January 22, 2010

I feel really fortunate to be a work at home mom. Lately there has been reason for me to be around the house and available to my family. Even though it sometimes requires that I work later into the evening to meet a client’s deadline,  in order to care for my family, at least as a Virtual Assistant business owner, I have that Choice. That is the greatest thing about having my own business is the amount of choice I get each day in all that I do. I choose my clients. Through a process of interviewing I am able to pick and choose who I work with just as much as they are able to pick me. I choose my hours. I can work around my family, get them to the doctor, keep the house in working order, (sometimes) and cook healthy meals at night. (most of the time) I am able to engage in life long learning, reading materials important to my career, go to graduate school, and truly “have it all”. (just not at the same time) I am very, very fortunate indeed. What do you love about working from home?

Joining Support Groups

October 15, 2009

I highly recommend finding and joining at least one group online or offline that will support, encourage, and motivate you toward success in your business. I wanted to share the group I am a member of. That group is Mom Masterminds. Mom Masterminds is a members only group. There is a fee, but the great thing is you only pay the fee for one year, (or you can pay once), monthly, and then you are a lifetime member. It is a very reasonable fee, in fact right now as I am writing this I am not even sure how much it costs anymore. You’ll have to go to the site and find out.  It is MORE than worth every penny. Just this week I had an experience (among many others) that let me know how worthwhile the membership is. I had the pleasure of talking to another woman, who is a member, over the phone. We talked for over two hours. I was struggling with some things that I want to do to move my business forward in my local community. I want to move forward and offer classes locally about social media, blogging, and website building. I have the
