Don’t be Desperate

It can be difficult to stay out of desperation mode if you were laid off, or for some reason you need money right now. (and don’t we all?) But, the very best thing you can do for yourself in your Virtual Assistant business is NOT to be in a big hurry and take just any client that comes along.

Even if you bid for a project, and then later figure out that the client is not someone you can or should work for, or that the job is not what you thought –  it is ok to not take the job.

If a retainer was paid give the money back that you did not earn, give them a full refund, (plus some if you use paypal for payment) and explain that this is not really the type of position that you desire. Recommend someone who may be good for the position if you know someone. Do not cut them down or criticize them.

Most people who are seeking to hire you will understand. They want someone who is passionate about what they are doing, and who really wants to do the job. They do not want to make you miserable, or cause you to do things that you’re uncomfortable with.

Remember – just because you’re not comfortable doesn’t make it wrong, or not perfect for the next VA. Every Virtual Assistant has their own idea of the perfect job. For me it is helping build WordPress(tm) sites, affiliate marketing, and social media. I like working with many aspects of someone’s business personally and one on one.

For the next VA it might be that they don’t want to work one on one with anyone so they might want to contact other VAs and ask to get their overflow work. The hourly pay will be reduced but there is more to work at home happiness than pay.

The important thing is to stay true to yourself and focused on your goals. If any one position does not fit in with your goals, pass it on to another fellow VA, there is more than enough work to go around.
